I-75 at County Road 54 (interchange reconstruction and resurfacing)

Project Description

Financial Project Numbers: 421831-4
Project Limits: from south of SR 56 to north of CR 54
Project Length: 4.3 miles
Estimated Construction Cost: $33 million
Contractor: The Lane Construction Corporation
Start Date: February 2, 2009
Estimated Completion Date: August 2010

About this Project

The Florida Department of Transportation's (FDOT) contractor is improving the interchange at Interstate 75 and County Road 54 (CR 54) to accommodate the future widening of CR 54 by Pasco County and to prepare for the future widening of I-75 to six lanes.

The project includes the complete removal and replacement of the existing bridges at CR 54, the resurfacing of I-75 from south of State Road 56 (SR 56) to north of CR 54, and the widening of entrance and exit ramps at CR 54. It also will include the construction of retention ponds, mitigation areas and storm drainage.

Project Detours

Detours will be necessary when overhead bridge work spans the width of eastbound or westbound lanes on CR 54. This work may include bridge demolition, placement of bridge beams, and concrete deck pours. The detours will be in place during overhead bridge operations at night during off-peak hours.

Improvement Highlights

  • The new bridge construction will provide two single-span bridges that will extend over CR 54, which will eliminate the center pier on CR 54 and improve motorist safety.
  • The new bridge and road construction will provide accommodations for future widening of I-75 to six lanes.
  • The existing roadway will be resurfaced from south of SR 56 to north of CR 54, replacing the existing asphalt surface that was placed in 1994.
  • The entrance and exit ramps will be improved to meet future traffic demands and the future widening of CR 54 under I-75.
    Traffic Flow

There should be minimal impact to local motorists. The construction phasing is designed so that all existing lanes of traffic will be maintained on I-75 and CR 54 during peak traffic hours.

    Night Work

In order to maintain the construction schedule and to minimize the impact to the public, it is necessary to perform a considerable amount of work at night. The majority of this work will include asphalt paving and bridge construction operations. Lane closures will be necessary during different phases of the project.

    Lane Closure Hours

    Interstate 75: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

    County Road 54: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
